In practical terms, WUH will publish a series of books on Business & Ethics directed at a younger audience - books to tackle workplace issues such as race and gender discrimination, safety, and business issues such as environmental responsibility, off-shore sourcing, and astronomical salary expectations.
We also hope to reach an older audience with an analytical series on Small Business that examines a wide range of topics - from the role that Small Business Administration plays to raising capital, uses of technology, the relationship between corporate businesses and small business.
The critical issue of Entrepreneurship remains central to these and all the other books we hope to publish.
There are other ways of bringing the message to a younger, or wider, population eager to seize fresh opportunities. Books are a first step. As it breaks out of a conceptual mode, WUH will take the message of entrepreneurship another step forward—from books to actual volunteer-driven seminars, camps, mentorship programs, and practical initiatives not only in North America but in other countries as well.
Our Mission
The World University for Humanity ("WUH") will be an organization designed to foster the spirit of Entrepreneurship across the globe.
- Not only entrepreneurship in terms of traditional 'business', but even in areas such as education, health, and agriculture.
- As its name suggests, WUH will be a centre of intellectual activity channeled to basic and sophisticated areas of knowledge
- There will be an ethical demand on WUH, its affiliates, and supporters to ensure a qualitative improvement in the economic and social lives of those it hopes to reach.
The WUH 'campus' of the future will consist of two specific units:
1) "Institute of Social Responsibility" to deliver a program leading to a Master's degree broadly encompassing elements of Education, Entrepreneurship, Education, Health, Agriculture, and Development. (For students admitted to WU, education will be free.
2) "Centre for Community Action & Training" dedicated to developing a portfolio of material and mechanisms of assistance and intervention–in different languages.
The Internet and future 'World University' Structure
The Internet "bubble" may be over, but the Internet is alive and well. In the words of Gary Becker, the 1992 Nobel Prize winner in Economics:
"The basic process of teaching has not changed for over 2000 years? . . . The Internet has the potential to be the first major change in this process since Socrates, I believe."
The World Univesity for Humanity Network
We share Becker's belief, and look forward to the day when WUH can ensure that the power of the Internet is used to bring exciting knowledge and information to and from remote and disadvantaged communities of the world and 'connect' them better to the Family of Man.
We do not aspire to an immediate future where every village or household in rural Africa, Asia, or Latin America is blessed with a PC. Rather, our goal is to help prepare a dynamic and dedicated group of entrepreneurs who share our social goals to use minimum technology for maximum effect in these and other regions, including communities in need in the 'developed' nations.
The 'World University' of the Future
WUH is founded on the belief that focused and targeted education can create the right conditions for entrepreneurial initiatives. Unfortunately, education itself has rarely proved to be a very promising economic activity.
One method of making education more cost effective than what is generally the case in traditional institutions is to solicit the efforts of volunteer 'academics'. WUH will next set about creating basic instructional material and exercises geared to specific needs as well as approaches to entrepreneurial activities.
'Academics' will come not only from colleges and universities, but from the world of business, health care and agriculture as well. In particular, we will seek the support of 'community venture capitalists', individuals inspired by more than the chance of making millions through IPOs.
While these volunteer academics might some day resemble something like 'Professors without Borders', the idea of WUH of the future is also predicated on a volunteer corps of graduate students who will go out into communities to spread educational programs designed by volunteers. In this sense, the students - following graduation - will resemble a cadre of 'Educational Peace Corps'.
To ensure their success, the students will not only enjoy "free" graduate studies, they will also be financially empowered to start and sustain small educational initiatives. For this, partnerships with financial institutions as well as with educational institutions will be essential.
We invite your comments to help us move towards a final blueprint.
Genesis and Progress to Date
The idea for the World University for Humanity was first broached in late 1998. Shortly thereafter, numerous supporters of the idea began to call for further explorations.
To date, promises of support and involvement
- The Fielding Institute of Santa Barbara, California,
- McGill University of Montreal, Canada,
- Universidad Abierta Interamericana of Buenos Aires, and
- Taleem Research Foundation of Ahmedabad, India.
Additional support will be drawn from increasing numbers of the world's top universities as the project develops further.
