Isolde’s Dream and Other Stories Sudhir Jain
The collection entitled "Isolde’s Dream" is anchored by stories of two women in love with two great romantic composers, Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler. In "Isolde’s Dream" Mathilde Wesendonck remembers her romance with the composer Richard Wagner when they were living in Zurich and he was composing his masterpiece, Tristan and Isolde, under the patronage of her husband. The tragedy of the opera makes its way into their own lives and the writer of "Isolde’s Dream" imaginatively and beautifully captures the pathos in the lives of Mathilde, Richard and their spouses. "Song of a Wayfarer" is the moving story of Gustav Mahler’s love affair with Marion von Weber, wife of the grandson of the composer Carl Maria von Weber. The two were thrown together when Mahler undertook to complete Weber’s sketches for the opera Die Drei Pintos. The author captures the life of middle-class German family in late nineteenth century Germany and weaves a fascinating tale of doomed love of a married woman with a young composer on his way to greatness. Other stories in the collection are humorous anecdotes from the adventurous life of an itinerant traveler told with a sense of self-deprecating humour and unique wit.
