Alex Anklebone & Andy the Dog By Richard Stevenson, Illustrated by Pamela Janelle Masi
Pity poor Alex Anklebone, so nicknamed for his aggravating habit of tugging on his mother's skirts and "nipping" at her ankles when he wants her to play. Baby brother Tommy is demanding all his mother's attention these days and he's not happy about it! More and more often, it seems, he is sent to his room to play by himself or watch a cartoon. A guy can only take so much television! This time, he's going to turn his bed into a galleon, with the help of Mom's broom and a little ingenuity with the sheets. He's going to lock Mom out by piling all his drawers against the door. He and first mate Andy, the family dog, are going to sail the ocean for a year, ride a cosmic wave twice around earth and once around Mars, maybe just plain disappear. Along for the ride are an assortment of oddball characters: an elephant with periscope nose, toy soldiers, even a no-nose potato head guy! Only after they all fall asleep, and Alex awakens to the sight of his little brother staring up and smiling at him from between the sheets, does Alex begin to understand. His mother and Tommy are going to need his help now more than ever. Maybe being a big brother and chasing dust bunnies out from under the bed with a broom can be fun too! Richard Stevenson lives with his wife, two children, and a niece in Lethbridge, Alberta, and teaches in the local community college. He has published 17 books and a collaborative CD of original jazz and poetry. Pamela Janelle Masi is a self-taught illustrator and cartoonist.
